Here’s how Tesseract, one of the best 3D Printing Companies in India put to use FDM 3D Printing technology in its fight against COVID-19

The uncertainty created globally by the COVID-19 pandemic has plunged the world into a major crisis. Due to lockdowns all around the world, logistical challenges causing disruptions in manufacturing and transportation have resulted in critical shortages of essential goods.

Said WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in Business Insider’s article by Sarah Al-Arshani dated 3rd May 2021, “To put it in perspective, there were almost as many cases globally last week as in the first five months of the pandemic.”

While the bulk of the new cases are in India, other countries continue to lurk in anguish and uncertainty including Iran, South American countries especially Brazil, Peru, Argentina, Colombia, Turkey, France, Netherlands and Sweden.

Along with vaccines and a host of medical supplies, there is one more tool in our hands which we can utilise to bring relief amidst a haltered state of affairs – 3D Printing.

We discuss here a classic case of how Tesseract, one of the most popular 3D Printing companies in Mumbai and India used FDM 3D Printing technology to cater to the needs of face shields for the frontline COVID workers.

Flashback 2020

On the evening of 24th March 2020, the Government of India ordered a nationwide lockdown for 21 days. Due to this, production of all the protective health supplies for our front liners was slowed down. There was a major ‘panic’ among India’s health workers over personal protective equipment shortages.

“The outbreak got us thinking about a quick fix solution. That’s when the idea of making face shields came up,” – Aman Modi, Co-founder Tesseract.
These words by Aman Modi, Co-founder of Tesseract, led to the beginning of the team’s tireless work. He recognized this alarming situation and decided to contribute to society during the deadly pandemic.

Face shields, equipment to protect the wearer’s face from any external hazards, are used very rarely in certain selective medical procedures. Usually, the manufacturing processes in the factory take about a fortnight to develop moulds after which production can be undertaken in bulk.

Due to this, their production was very limited and their demand was too high.
While the traditional manufacturing processes could contribute to the production processes only after a fortnight, we couldn’t keep the frontline workers waiting!

How FDM 3D Printing came to rescue

And that’s when we decided to produce face shields using FDM 3D Printing to fill the gap in those trying times. Our dedicated team began their hustle by working in shifts during the trying times. When nothing made sense outside, we continued to work day and night to manufacture face shields.

The team produced around 800+ face shields every day in our 3D printing farm with around 70 3D Printing machines. In 2 months, we were able to manufacture and distribute 75000+ face shields among corona warriors working in the fields of administration, medicine, police, civil defence, sanitation who were exposed to the highest risk!

FDM 3D printing successfully transposed its capabilities during Covid-19, revealing its competitive advantage in emergencies. Jyoti Shelar, the editor in The Hindu, appreciated our work in her Article, ‘COVID-19: Youngsters step up to make face shields’ dated April 8, 2020. Tesseract has been successful in amplifying the commitment with innovative solutions to help in the global COVID-19 supply efforts.

This new-age technology
From this, we can understand the important role of 3D Printers in solving Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) shortages with innovative solutions. Since coronavirus has spread across the globe, there is tremendous pressure on supply chains.

3D printed face shields and respirators have been some of the most popular printed parts donated to hospitals and medical workers. In regions with stricter lockdowns where the supply chain may be completely shut off as borders continue to close and travel is restricted,

3D printing is providing a critical lifeline allowing customized replacement parts to be produced at a moment’s notice. 3D printing helping to save lives around the world.
